Any reform of the Disability Living allowance must be made with the intention of promoting the independence and quality of life of people with disabilities, and not as a cost cutting measure.In addition, the consultation document states that These would not, however, our intention to use the universal credit reform to reduce the levels of support for people in vulnerable circumstances. Too many people with muscle diseases are already struggling to make ends meet, as they face rising costs of living with a disability. We will ask the Government to ensure that people with muscle disease will not be worse as a result of the proposed reforms to the welfare and benefits.
In addition, statements in the consultation paper continues a disturbing tendency on the part of ministers and government officials to suggest that Disability Living Allowance is a benefit of employment, rather than a way to get the cost of additional staff to live with a disability face – for example, to pay their own wheelchairs, the cost of higher heating and electricity and are often forced to spend thousands of pounds to make their homes accessible.

The campaign welcomes the consultation of Welfare in the age of 21 documents to simplify the complex system of benefits and make the process more efficient. There are, however, deep concern that the consultation document is limited in terms of detail about what this means for people with disabilities who are unable to work, and where there is more information available, it gives rise to great concern .
